Branch 0
Well this is the thing I hear to very different things about the pure whippet those who have them would have nothing else those who don’t have them seem to hate them!! Some say great ferreting dogs others say the have to short a concentration span. Some say they take the odd fox others say the fox gets the odd whippet!! ….? Some opinions based on photographic evidence would be great thanks Quote Link to post
Bosun11 537
Good post this, as there seems to be a lot of interest in pure whippets through EDRD over the past few months with a name or two that I would't associate with the breed owning them and I am wondering why......? Not that I know much about 'em....though age 8 my first dog was a whippet an was a cracker but our local track closed a year or two later an info has been scarce around these parts for the past 23 years as i aint seen a pure bred work since. BLACKBOB 9
Ok mate, from my experience, if they from good working stock, they make excellent ferreting dogs, as for concentration levels, the one i worked many years ago would have died on the spot concentrating, it was an excellent marker also. As for lamping it was a 1 on short cut fields especially golf courses, but did struggle a bit on cropped fields. Let him rag the odd fox, which had neared its end, but as for slipping him on a fox single handed In my opinion they are to fine a dog to contemplate taking a hiding of a fox and you also need to be carefull where you lamp as they cant take to much of a bump. Nearly lost one which ran into a fallen branch once, and burst a blood vessle in its shoulder, probably only survived as it didnt break the skin otherwise he would have bled to death. Obviously this goes for all dogs when lamping, try and check the area first, as farmers are quite good at leaving things hanging around in their field cheers bob Quote Link to post

bullyson 2,023
personaly i think they make superb ferreting dogs, good on lamp, not the best fox dogs but they will try their heart out for you. the only fault i can think of is that thier skin tears easily and some of mine sometimes look unhappy in the real bad weather. as for concentration my 4 year old dog celt would spend 24 hours outside a warren if their was rabbits in, he marks 100% and if he raises he's leg and points his head down rabbit stew is guaranteed on the menu chees keith ps. heres a pic of jake " lord of the knight" with fox taking single handed, he wasn't a foxing dog but would take a few now again. luke 2
THE THING I VALUE MORE THAN ANY THING ELSE IN A DOG IS HEART AND A WHIPPET WILL GIVE YOU A HUNDRED AND TEN PERCENT EVERY TIME Quote Link to post
bullyson 2,023
THE THING I VALUE MORE THAN ANY THING ELSE IN A DOG IS HEART AND A WHIPPETWILL GIVE YOU A HUNDRED AND TEN PERCENT EVERY TIME i agree with you luke 100%, at the end of the day if your dog does his best for you you cant ask for much more, jake " lord of the knights" son celt the whippet dog i have at the moment will (pre ban) run a fox like its his last but when he get bitten he will let go, but no matter how many times he gets bitten he will always run the next fox like his first.i know it sounds like im making excuses for him but for what he lacks on fox he makes up for on rabbits, very few rabbits get a chance to get 5 yards from the burrow, 9 times out of ten he will tip toe on top of the warren following the action below and intersepts the rabbits as soon as they come out.cheers keith Quote Link to post
Guest reload
Theres more too them than just the 'commercially bred whippets'..'easy to get your hands on' which you see advertised everywhere. Do your homework and take your time there out there. I wouldnt expect them to take the complete spectrum of quarry, but they will die trying pedigree whipets are to well bred the KC has spoilt them thats my opinion. Does [NO TEXT TALK] agree/ Disagree ? I don't agree. Whys that then, and based on what? Edited June 18, 2007 by reload Quote Link to post
blando 0
pedigree whipets are to well bred the KC has spoilt them thats my opinion. Does [NO TEXT TALK] agree/ Disagree ? I think the working stuff is good, its just the show crap they have messed up as working dogs! Im unusal and seem to be the only one running non-ped racing whippets but they are fine on rabbits got the heart to try a fox single handed but i dont let them anymore! its not fair on them! i have never seen a ped run so i cant say much. mine are only 19" and have trouble spotting rabbits in the distance and long grass. sorry for the bad quality old pic she was only 11 mounths here (i no a bit early for her to see big ears) Edited June 18, 2007 by blando Quote Link to post

luke 2
thats a smart looking bitch blando i think that a lot of people get the impression that show stuff is no good but dont realise that laguna oak bark and all the rest are kc registered and have done well at shows its just that most dont get the chance to work mines are off top show stuff and are some of the srongest i have ever ran in the field. there is only two negatives i can think of they hate the rain and realy wet bottom less ground Quote Link to post
